Notes

glnK is a glnB paralog. Like GlnB, the GlnK protein is a member of the trimeric PII signal transduction protein family. In nitrogen limitation it is subject to post-translational modification by uridylylation (mediated by GlnD) of Tyr51 in the T-loop of each subunit. This modification is reversed in N-sufficient conditions. In ammonium sufficient conditions non-uridylylated GlnK forms a 1:1 complex with the ammonia channel protein AmtB and prevents ammonium uptake through AmtB. Complex formation is reversed by ammonium starvation. [Comment provided by EcoTeam member Mike Merrick, 11.16.06][4]
