abgAB expression is required for catabolism to feed p-aminobenzoate auxotrophs (Hussein, 1998; Carter, 2007). AbgAB probably catalyzes the hydrolysis of p-aminobenzoyl-glutamate to p-aminobenzoate (Carter, 2007). The abg operon is silent and an AbgR inducer has not been found (Hussein, 1998; Carter, 2007). AbgB is a member of the M20 peptidase family. abgA and abgB are paralogs.[4]
