Cell envelope integrity is stabilized by the Tol-Pal system linking inner and outer membranes. Mutants have elevated OM vesiculation (McBroom, 2006).[4]

Phages can bind to the periplasmic domain of tolA and thus infect the cell (see Phage_f1). [5]
