MaeA catalyzes four reactions: I, NAD-dependent L-malate decarboxylation; II, NAD-independent oxalacetate decarboxylation; III, oxalacetate reductase, NAD-dependent; !V, pyruvate reductase, NAD-dependent. Acetyl-CoA and ATP are allosteric inhibitors; aspartate is an allosteric activator. Reaction I proceeds by two steps: dehydrogenation, then decarboxylation.[4]
