Why a rod?

The Question

Why is E. coli a rod?

Background

There are 3 major types of cell morphologies for bacteria:

    1. coccus (spherical)
    2. bacillus (rod)
    3. spirillium (spiral)

E. coli is a rod-shaped bacterium. But why? Is there an advantage to being a rod as a enteric bacterium? If so, what is the advantage? Why are there 3 major cell morphologies? Why isn't there just one, or, contrarily, why aren't there more (mixtures of the three)?
