GGDEF proteins catalyze the formation of the second messenger cyclic di-GMP through the cyclization of two GTP molecules. Overexpression of cyclic di-GMP has been shown to be toxic in E. coli BL21 strains but not in DH5α <ref name=PMID:15716451>.
