Phage T4
Bacteriophage T4 is a member of the ICTV family myoviridae, long-tailed viruses with contractile tails. T4 is the namesake of the T4-like virus genus. T4 and its relatives were used for many of the key experiments in the history of molecular biology.

Morphology
Genome Organization
T4 has a circular genetic map[1], but the T4 genome is physically packaged as linear dsDNA. Headful packaging incorporates DNA that is circularly permuted[2] and terminally redundant[3] with respect to the genetic map.

DNA replication
Initiation of DNA replication has been reviewed by Kreuzer and Brister[4] and many references needed. Replication starts early in infection from multiple origins and then shifts to a recombination-dependent phase.
T4 replisomes have been intensely studied, and work from the Alberts lab led to the "trombone model" for coupling of leading and lagging strand progression. High resolution structures for part or all of several replisome proteins have been determined (reviewed by Mueser et al. [5])
