EcoliWiki:PortEco support request 2012
Porteco, the project that supports EcoliWiki, will be submitting as a competitive R01 submission for the upcoming November deadline (next month). If your lab uses EcoliWiki and PortEco, we would appreciate it if you could write a letter of support for continued funding of the project.
A condensed version of the specific aims of our renewal is:
- To expand and improve access to large-scale datasets, along with tools to compare and contrast data from multiple kinds of studies. Building on our recent progress, we will:
- Continue to expand our coverage of available data, add support for additional types of expression (e.g. RNA-seq, ribosome profiling, nascent transcript sequencing) and phenotype (e.g. phenotypic microarray, competitive fitness) data.
- Expand the ability of users to mine data from different perspectives, including starting from processes of interest.
- Improve viewing and comparing high-throughput data in the context of the genome
- To improve annotation of E. coli genes and genomes.
- Continue to improve functional annotation using Gene Ontology (GO).
- Organize community reannotation of “gold standard” phage genomes.
- To extend PortEco to B. subtilis.
Given current funding constraints, and the fact that we are having to use the R01, rather than the U01 mechanism, it is especially important that we have strong letters of support for the project to stand a chance of renewal. We think your letter would be most effective if it could address the following:
- What does your lab do? What specific questions is your lab interested in, how might these questions have an impact beyond just work in E. coli, and what are your sources of funding. Please be specific, even to the point of referencing a recent high impact publication.
- How has Porteco impacted your and your lab's work - has it enabled you to do things that you otherwise couldn't have? How would it impact your lab if Porteco disappeared tomorrow?
- How will Porteco's proposed aims help your group in their research? Again, if you can provide specific examples, that will really help.
Of course, if you have comments on the specific aims, either to refine them, or things that you think we are missing, we would greatly appreciate knowing those thoughts.
Apologies for the short timeframe, but realistically, we need your letter by next Tuesday (October 30th). Please send the letter as a pdf on letterhead to portecohelp@gmail.com.
Many thanks, The PortEco team
