About

DNA mutagenesis introduces mutations into the DNA sequence as a way to generate mutants to study protein function. Chemical mutagenesis is one method these mutations may be introduced. Another commonly used mechanism to induce mutations into DNA is ionizing radiation (such as UV light).

Types of Chemical Mutagens

  • Hydroxylamine (HA)

HA causes C->T and G->A transitions in the DNA

  • Formic Acid (FA)

FA causes G->A and A->G transitions as well as G->T, A->T, G->C, and A->C transversions in the DNA

  • Hydrazine (HZ)

HZ induces C->T and G->A transitions
