About
Description (originally from EcoCyc[1][2]) allantoinase
Comments (originally from EcoCyc[1][2]) E. coli is able to utilize allantoin as a sole nitrogen source under anaerobic conditions. It can not utilize it as a sole carbon source. Allantoinase catalyzes the first reaction in the assimilation of allantoin. The enzyme has a very narrow substrate specificity, it is only slightly active on hydantoin, isopropylhydantoin and 5-bromouracil. [3][4]
