Tatum, EL and Lederberg, J (1947) Gene Recombination in the Bacterium Escherichia coli.J. Bacteriol. 53:673-84

Abstract Evidence has been presented for the occurrence of character recombination in the bacterium Escherichia coli. This suggests the existence of a sexual phase. Recombinations of genes controlling several growth factor requirements and resistance to a specific bacteriophage have been found. (from Summary at the end of the paper)
