About

We use tables to organize information in EcoliWiki. It's possible to use Wiki mark-up to make tables, but it isn't easy. The EcoliWiki team has written a TableEdit extension to make it much easier to create and edit tables in mediawiki.

Create a new table

Step 1: Add a newTableEdit tag where you want the table to appear.

To add a new table that can be edited by TableEdit, there are two options:

  • Add an empty table by putting <newTableEdit/> in the text wheere you want the table to appear.
  • Add a table with defined headings by entering the following:
<newTableEdit>
Heading 1
Heading 2
Heading 3
etc...
</newTableEdit>
You can edit the columns later if needed.

Step 2: Save the page.

TableEdit will put a link in the page that says Create table here.

Step 3: Edit the table.

Click on the link and use the table editor to add or edit information. If you used option 2, the table headings you defined will automatically appear. If you used option 1, you will create column headings as you start to edit the table.

Example

When you save your entry, a Create table here link will appear on the page. Click on this link and an editable version of the table will appear as shown in the picture below.

To add information to the table, click on the Add data button and text boxes will appear for data entry.

The default table format is horizontal (headings running from L to R across the top of the table). If you want a vertical table (headings running from Top to Bottom in the first column of the table), you can rotate the table after you have created it.
