About Protein Data Bank (PDB)
The Protein Database (Protein Data Bank (PDB)) is the central repository for protein and nucleic acid structures. The PDB was founded based on discussions at Cold Spring Harbor Lab in 1971. The PDB was announced in 1971 in Nature New Biology[1]. It was first funded by NSF in 1975.
In 2003, the PDB entered into a collaboration with other repositories to form the wwPDB[2]
Content
The PDB is the repository for structural data for macromolecules. A summary of the kinds of structures in the PDB can be viewed in the poster "Molecular Machinery: A Tour of the Protein Data Bank" by David S. Goodsell. Deposition of structure coordinate files in the PDB has been required by journals in order to publish a structure determination since the 1980s. Additional metadata requirements have been added since then.
